aliens, alternate worlds and laser guns?
"science fiction is what we point to when we say it" - Damon Knight
The other day I had a craving for a good Science Fiction flick. Being an amateur movie buff, I decided to punch a search into trusty Google and lets the movie list pile up... Instead I was faced with links that could not satisfy my craving - not even a tasty appetiser to be seen until I scrolled a few pages - and in between; something that resembled my own 'idea' of a Science Fiction movie.
Let me explain my confusion - To me, a 'Sci-Fi' movie is one which has futuristic elements, aliens, technology, space travel, time travel and SCIENCE. When I say science, I don't mean drugs, I don't mean gravity, I don't mean food, I am talking about stuff we can't or are only just beginning to comprehend now.
Am I just a minority? Are there others out there who feel the same way?
Google tells me;
science fiction
noun
- 1.fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets.
I thought so... It's not just me, so why did THE THING show up as a great Sci Fi movie on IGN's list of the 25 best Sci Fi movies? Last I watched it, it was more of a thriller type deal than one with a frequent portrayal of space or time travel or similar.
IMDb gave me a list of 100 sci movies! Great... Lets see... Wait a minute, the first 6 movies haven't even been released yet? They're due for release this year, but not yet... (as at 8/3/2014)
So you can see my frustration here. So I decided best to compile my own list from 1995 till now. I will List my movies in no particular order for those who share a similar passion to their Sci-Fi as me.
